Practical Applications of AI in Teaching Mathematics for Elementary Teachers

Abstract

This article examines how educators can use generative artificial intelligence (AI) in math courses for preservice elementary teachers. We provide strategies for AI integration in three areas: syllabus policy statements, planning support, and classroom activities. These strategies consider teaching innovation, practicality, and ethics.We propose four activities for AI-curious educators: drafting AI-focused syllabus policies, generating example data for statistics and data science lessons, summarizing PSTs discussions using ChatGPT, and inviting PSTs to engage in teacher-student conversations about challenging and conceptually dense mathematical concepts. We discuss testing limitations, including the ability to explain mathematical ideas conceptually, the limited use of visual outputs in text-based tools, and ethical considerations of using AI.
