A lot of the math in this issue starts somewhere outside the textbook. Kelly Remijan builds middle-school problems around how the military uses GPS and SONAR. Blair Izard and Kristal Cloft hand students a misleading graph from the 2020 election and ask them to fix it. Montana Smithey and Alesia Mickle Moldavan pair place value with food insecurity in a task written for kindergarten through second grade. Ahmad Alhammouri sends sixth-graders out with TI-Rovers and motion sensors to find slope, and he tells it warts and all.

The other thread is teachers checking their own work. James Quinlan runs first-semester calculus students through online homework and traditional paper, then compares quiz and exam scores. Edward Laughbaum argues that algebra instruction should follow how the brain actually forms long-term memory. And Todd Edwards, Zheng Yang, and Carlos Lopez-Gonzalez pair students from China and the United States around calculus tasks, watching what carries across the language and the distance.
