Fractions and geometry carry this issue. The center of it is a pair of linked Produce Basket papers from Adams, Bucci, McEwan, and Reinthal: one lays out their elementary module, built around a basket that stands for the whole and rooted in Bob Moses and the Algebra Project, and the other reports what happened when twenty-two preservice teachers at Ohio State Mansfield spent eight weeks with it. The argument is that formal fraction notation is where number sense stalls, and that a precise meaning of “fraction” can be taught before the symbols arrive.
The geometry runs from the classroom to the clever result. Snyder and Kara hand students five chosen snowflakes and ask them to model what makes a snowflake a snowflake; Moyer and Krach build perimeter and area out of reflection and rotation. Kaufman shows that Area/Perimeter equals r/2 not just for triangles but for any shape with an inscribed circle, and Minor offers a divisibility test for integers ending in 1, 3, 7, or 9, proof included.
