This is the issue where people start checking AI’s work. The results are mixed, and the articles say so. For example, Sawyer, Sutherland, and Aga ran one multiplication problem past seven chatbots; six got it wrong. Li, Wu, and Yang spend less energy on what AI can do and more on teaching students to question it. On the hopeful side, Mocko and colleagues use language models to help statistics students build mnemonics, and several students said the work eased their anxiety.

Underneath many of these papers is a worry about who gets left out. Zhu and colleagues use AI to rewrite a fraction problem for multilingual learners; Kormos writes about the digital divide in Ohio’s own classrooms. The issue also holds plenty that owes nothing to a chatbot, including Berendonk’s one-picture proof that the first n odd numbers add up to a square.
