Establishing Equations and Encountering Elves

Abstract

The author explores a problem about a team desiring to mount an attack on the North Pole. The problem offers interesting constraints that requires students to seek out patterns, set up scenarios, and find general forms. While working through the problem, the author explores ways in which problems of this sort foster student mathematical growth.
