Author Guidelines
Aims and Scope
The Ohio Journal of School Mathematics (OJSM) publishes work that supports the teaching and learning of mathematics across K–16 settings. We welcome manuscripts that explore classroom practice, instructional innovations, curriculum design, teacher preparation, technology integration, and other topics that connect mathematical ideas to pedagogy. Submissions should prioritize the human side of mathematics—how students and teachers engage with mathematical thinking—rather than focusing solely on mathematical content or proofs.
How to Submit
Interested in submitting to OJSM? Please review our About the Journal pages for section policies and manuscript preparation instructions.
Authors must register with the journal prior to submitting. If you are already registered, simply log in to begin the five-step submission process.
AI in the Publication Process
OJSM embraces the use of artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool to enhance the writing and communication process for both authors and editors.
OJSM’s Use of AI Includes:
- Screening manuscripts for adherence to structural and content guidelines
- Summarizing and communicating feedback from review panelists
- Enhancing editorial communication with authors throughout the publication process
Encouragement for Authors
We encourage authors to explore AI tools to support their writing and revision process. AI may assist with:
- Brainstorming: Developing ideas and refining initial drafts
- Proofreading and Editing: Improving grammar, structure, and coherence
- Data Analysis: Interpreting, organizing, and reporting data
- Consistency Checks: Ensuring alignment across manuscript sections
Transparency and Disclosure
To foster trust and accountability, authors must disclose any use of AI tools in their manuscript. Submissions coauthored with AI will be explicitly marked as such in publication.
OJSM Reviewer Criteria
Every manuscript submitted to OJSM is reviewed with the following criteria in mind:
Relevance & Contribution
- Does the article connect meaningfully to the teaching and learning of mathematics?
- Is the topic timely and relevant for teachers and students?
Clarity & Structure
- Is the writing clear and well-organized?
- Are key terms and ideas explained well for a broad audience?
- Are examples or visuals (if any) used effectively?
Evidence & Rationale
- Are claims supported by research, classroom experience, or thoughtful reflection?
Practical Usefulness
- Can educators apply or adapt the ideas in their classrooms?
- Are tools, prompts, or models clearly described for real use?
Voice & Tone
- Is the tone collegial, thoughtful, and inclusive?
- Does it invite curiosity and engagement?
Authors are encouraged to review these criteria before submitting. Our goal is to support writers at every stage and to help shape manuscripts that are useful, engaging, and relevant to the broader math education community.
